Thanks for your comment, can I ask what it is exactly that you’re installing? Having email on your device is just a matter of adding in the Exchange (or IMAP) server details and should not involve any of the above. If you would like us to take a closer look, feel free to come and visit the Service Desk on level 4 of the Sherfield building.
Hi,
I’ve finally got the Imperial mail account synchronised but it required me to “Activate device administrator”. I am being asked to give permissions to the Imperial server to:
- Erase all phone data without warning.
- Change screen unlock password
- Set password rules
- Allow password expiry
- Track password history
- Control screen lock settings
- Control functionality of the following phone features: Camera, Wi-Fi, text messaging, Internet use, Internet sharing, Bluetooth, device encryption, SD card encryption, desktop syns and a variety of other message encryption features.
In addition to the above it allows Imperial servers to control email features such as attachment limit etc. – which is fair enough. However it seems excessive to allow control over all the above features of the phone just to access email on my phone – something which I can do through the phone browser without have to give up all control over my phone to the Imperial IT department.
Can you fix this issue?
Thanks.
Kyle, if you can come to the Service Desk or let us know your username (not your password) we can enable ActiveSync on your account here and then it will start working within 24hrs (usually much sooner)
Hello I am also using an Android phone with the 2.3.3 software. I’ve been using the PDF earlier mentioned but entered exchange.imperial.ac.uk instead of icex.imperial.ac.uk. I have also set up the Activesync account. I am still unable to connect my Imperial email account with my phone. Is there a guide which I can follow to correct this?
Thanks.
Please note that there was an issue which meant that ActiveSync accounts where not going through on the server. This problem should now have been resolved. If you continue to have problems, please contact the ICT Service Desk directly, either by emailing at service.desk@imperial.ac.uk, or calling us on 020 759 49000
Hi, I have the same problem as above. Could you please check my account as well?
Thanks
Hi Chris, I’ve checked out your records and despite enabling activeSync for you, it hasn’t gone through on the email servers – this has now been forced through and should start working within the next few hours – the settings you have are all correct.
I’m not sure whether this is one of the difficulties you mention, but I also can’t connect to my exchange mailbox on my Android 2.3.3 device at all. It has ActiveSync support, and I’ve enabled ActiveSync on my account, but I keep getting authentication errors, telling me my login information is incorrect (it’s not). Am I doing something wrong, or is this a known issue? I can still use the browser to get mail, but that’s a bit cumbersome. Any other workarounds?

Thanks for this. We are currently reviewing all the FAQs and How To guides and updating them. I have also made your views known to our Email / Messaging support team.
In the meantime, you can look at an additional web page (see link below), which provides further information you could find useful, written as part of an extensive project to upgrade everyone’s mailboxes. This led to a change of server address, which caused a few people some difficulties.

It would be useful to have this page reviewed for current blackberrys and iphones, and also add information for Android users.
There is an elusive PDF on setting up emails on Android phones dated 2009, but I am having difficulty following it on the newer android 2.3
