How do I connect to Imperial’s wireless service?

October 1, 2009
by The ICT FAQ Monkey

There are two wireless networks available on campus:

Imperial-WPA is for use by students and staff. This is a secure network that provides access to all networked facilities.

Imperial is for guest access and instructions can be found here: Imperial Guest Wireless

We have put together some handy guides to help you set up wireless access from your laptop.

Wireless for XP

Wireless for Vista

Wireless for Mac

Wireless for iPhone

You can also connect with other mobile devices such as Blackberries, Google Android, Windows Mobile, Nokias and other portable devices with wireless built in.  Please note these devices will need to be able to connect to a WPA/WPA2 enterprise network.

We are in the process of updating our documentation for Windows 7 users, at which point our ICT Networks web pages and our How To guides will contain appropriate information. Apologies for the delay.

There should be an option on the same screen to ignore the certificate. Ticking this option should allow you to connect.

I have a blackberry curve, it asks for CA certificate to connect to Imperial WPA, which CA certificate do I pick?

  3. Jack says:

Hi Rebecca, if you are not being asked to enter your credentials you may need to ask the device to forget the network… You can usually do this by going into the list of wireless networks and holding your finger on the Imperial-WPA, then tapping ‘Forget this network’. If you require any assistance with this or experience any issues please feel free to bring your device to the service desk so that we can take a look.

I have just bought an android phone and I am trying to follow the online instructions for connecting to the Wifi, however I can find no option for connection settings, or anywhere to put in my username and password, so it just says Authentication problem…..

We are working on putting together a guide for connecting to the wireless using Windows 8. In the meantime, please bring your laptop along to the service desk so that we can take a look.

What device are you trying to connect with? It *should* be straight-forward with most common smart phones and laptops etc. Let us know if you have any errors and we’ll try and help. If you’re in South Ken campus, pop up to Level 4 Sherfield and visit us – we’ll fix it there and then, guaranteed.

I’m trying to connect to the network from campus and somehow fail groriously. Help, please?

  13. Jack says:

    Hi Stefon,

This is usually caused by an issue with the certificate which the Blackberry uses to authenticate. Please bring the device to the service desk when you get a chance, so that we can take a look.

    Hi,

When I attempt to connect to Imperial-WPA on my windows mobile phone, I get a notification saying that the server certificate is issued by an unknown authority, and I am unable to connect. I used to be able to connect from my phone. How should I go about resolving this issue?

    Thanks.

“identity” refers to your College username, i.e. the one you use to logon to PCs in college. If you’re still having difficultly connecting to the wireless, come and see us on the 4th Floor of Sherfield (open 9-5pm, Mon – Fri)

Do I need username and passwork to connect to College Wireless?
    How can I get it?

    Many thanks

  22. Service Desk says:

Unfortunately, we do not as yet have any official documentation on using wireless with Windows 7 on campus. However, we are in the process of rectifying this. In the meantime, here are a few notes.

Once you have switched on your wireless service, on campus, you should see in the bottom right of the screen the usual wireless icon. Single-click on this and you should see a choice of possible networks. For students and staff, the main wireless service you should use is Imperial-WPA. Single-click on this and you should see ‘Connect’ as an option. Before you click on this, you may want to tick the ‘Connect automatically’ box.

After clicking on Connect, you may be prompted to accept a security certificate. You may even be warned that ‘the connection attempt could not be completed’. Either continue, by clicking on Connect again, or click on the Details button for more information. The VeriSign certificate is valid, so accept the certificate (if prompted) and carry on. Hopefully, you’ll then be able to connect without any further hitch. If you do still have an issue, please visit the Service Desk. Location details are available here: http://bit.ly/b7q80U.

Note: For people visiting the college and without a valid logon, you will need to choose other options, such as eduroam (if you are registered) or one of the connections for guests and other visitors.
