If you find that the wireless connection is not strong enough in your halls room, or you need a faster connection in the library then you can still connect using a network cable.
Once you have connected the cable to your laptop you need to open your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Firefox). You will then be redirected to a registration page, where you will log in and register your laptop.
If you do not see the registration page, try going to another website for example www.bbc.co.uk and this should redirect you to the registration page.
To use your landline phone in Halls you will need to register and then top-up. It works in the same way as a Pay-as-you-Go mobile phone. You will need a credit or debit card to put money on the account.

To Top-up: http://student.unitel.co.uk/signin.php

As there are a lot of students accessing the Halls network, ICT have put a limit on the bandwith you can use. This limit is 5Gb in a rolling 24 hour period. Bandwith is made up of uploading and downloading (this is all internet activity).
When you are banned for the first , second and third time the ban will be lifted automatically after 48 hours. On the fourth offence, your network service will be withdrawn for fourteen days. After a fifth offence, access to the Halls network may be withdrawn on a permanent basis.
If you wish to query a ban you will need to contact your college tutor, as they will get in contact with ICT on your behalf.
You may also be banned if your laptop gets a virus. The network bans you to stop the virus spreading. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer this fate then please bring the laptop to Service Desk (at the address on the right hand side of this page) and we will try to remove the virus so you can once again connect in Halls.
You will also get banned if you break any of the rules set out in the Student Halls or Imperial College Terms and Conditions.
If you are banned but do not know why then please call us using the number on the right hand side.
To connect to the network sockets in Halls and the library you will need a network cable. You can buy one from the Imperial College Union Shop on the level 2 walkway opposite the Senior Common Room (South Kensington).
A network cable may also be called an ethernet or RJ45 cable.
To find the union shop, go to the South Kensington campus map. The shop is between buildings 14 and 15.
