ICTAP is yet another acronym, but unlike most which refer to various bits of technology, this refers to a select group of people from across the College who, together discuss ICT as a department and its services to the other departments, from computers, to processes, training, additional services, feedback and more.
Here are the duties of ICTAP – to see reports and the like, see the ICTAP pages here.
To try and ensure equitable representation of disciplines, IT interests and expertise, and in terms of College status, membership of this panel is by invitation only.
- To provide a forum for an informed discussion by Departmental IT Representatives, and other interested persons, on any matter of concern to customers of the ICT services.
- To provide a means of reporting proposed service changes and developments and to obtain customer reaction.
- To receive customers’ suggestions on future ICT needs, and possible service improvements.
In order to keep ICTAP meetings to a manageble level of attendees we reget that only one nominated member from each department will be invited to ICTAP meetings. Departments without current ICTAP representation are requested to sent their nominations to the ICTAP Chairman: Chris Metcalfe for consideration.
College uses standard builds of operating systems to deploy and support machines more efficiently. The default Windows build is Windows 7 64 bit, which is being installed extensively on new machines. We standardised on the 64-bit version to ensure future-proofing.
The current approach is to install Windows 7 on all new machines, or any that might require reinstallation as part of support activity (e.g. if a machine is infected with a virus that cannot be easily removed). The approach will change to one of proactive upgrade of any remaining XP machines when this approaches the end of its support by Microsoft (currently April 2014).
A small number of key business applications in use within College have been identified as being incompatible or unsupported on Windows 7. Current policy is to install Windows XP users of any of the following:
||Finance, Alumni Office, Sport Imperial
||Business School (Marketing)
||Estates, Commercial Services
||Finance (Purchasing Dept & ICIS Purchasing)
||Commercial Services (Conference Office, Student Accommodation Centre, Residences staff & wardens)
||Estates, College Security
||Finance (Payroll & Payables)
|Sports Centre (Advantage)
Henceforth, ICT would discourage departments from purchasing any software which is not supported on Windows 7 64 bit.
Please note that College licencing agreements require that our build is only installed on College owned machines.
