Amazing mace

9 June 2010

Awards HonorsThe silversmith who created the College’s ceremonial mace, Carl Padgham of Padgham and Putland, has been awarded a Gold Award in the Senior Silversmith category in the 2010 Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Awards. The Goldsmiths’ Company commissioned the mace as a gift for Imperial to mark the independence of Imperial in 2007. Weighing 7.1kg and measuring 1.2 metres, the mace incorporates a helix-shaped stem representing the structure of human DNA to reflect the College’s mission to carry out and apply cutting edge scientific research. It is topped by a head depicting the College’s crest and also includes the Goldsmiths’ Company’s coat of arms.
