Family affair
Last week the College was visited by streams of eager and anxious-to-impress sixth formers for Imperial’s annual science and engineering undergraduate open day. Keen to gain insight into the first impressions we offer to prospective students I sat alongside them at the introduction given by the Department of Physics as they were wowed by videos of explosions used to illustrate shock physics and by Dr Mark Richards’ sound wave experiments in which he remixed Rihanna’s pop song Umbrella to a reggae beat. I was touched to see so many equally captivated parents, diligently taking notes and probing current undergraduates in the question and answer session. Seeing them reminded me how integral parents are to supporting our students, even though many of us only see them at open day and graduation – the bookends of the student experience.
