The Exceptional PA Network Brunch

On 2 December Commercial Services and Steve Rathborn, Head of the Learning and Development Centre, hosted a PA Brunch at 170 Queens Gate on the South Kensington Campus. The event was held to recognise the hard work of PA’s across the College, and included guest speakers Laura Richardson (winner of PA of the Year) and Chief Financial Officer Dr Martin Knight. Amna Siddiq, Events and Communications Officer and PA to the Director of Communications and Development, describes the event:
“I was joined by 20 other Imperial PA’s to hear a fascinating presentation from Laura Richardson, who won PA of the Year- an award given by Hays PA and Secretarial and The Times. Laura is currently a PA to the CEO of Elexon, a company which deals with residential and business electricity settlement services for the UK electricity trading industry. Laura shared her tips for success and other personal anecdotes which led her to receive the honour of PA of the Year. One of her pointers which I found particularly interesting was that PA’s should act as brand ambassadors to their bosses. Martin Knight also spoke at the event. He described PA’s as being executives, rather than secretaries, and also shed some light on how instrumental his PA, Emma Gibson, is to him. He advised us that PA’s should play the role of an informant, and act as a gatekeeper, not a barrier. It was an enlightening and motivational morning that left me contemplating what I could do to be better in my role.”
