Alumni reception with the Rector in Hong Kong
17 August 2011

On 12 August, over 130 alumni and guests joined the Rector, Sir Keith O’Nions, at an alumni reception in Hong Kong. Describing the Imperial College Alumni Association of Hong Kong (ICAAHK) as a powerhouse, Sir Keith said to guests: “You are one of the most proactive and generous of our alumni groups. You are hugely influential people in all walks of life – it is terrific to see you here.”
Dr Leonard Chow (Mechanical Engineering 1984), Chairman of the ICAAHK, explained that his ambition was to strengthen the link between Hong Kong alumni and the College. One way of doing so was to encourage more alumni to donate towards Imperial scholarships which support the best students.
Professor Paul Cheung (Electrical Engineering 1973 PhD 1976) spoke of his experiences in the 1970s as the beneficiary of an Imperial scholarship for Hong Kong students. He said: “For me it was the greatest encouragement. The honour drove me to always work hard and to feel obliged to Imperial, as I still do.” Calling on guests to contribute to Imperial’s fundraising initiatives he said, “The best investment you can make is not in stocks and shares, it’s in education. We do so for our children and for future generations – it is important for the future of our nation.”
