Imperial marathon runner raising funds for scholarships
26 January 2012

Staff member Sam Bell, Services Manager for Sport Imperial, will be running the London Marathon in April to raise funds for the Rector’s Scholarship Fund.
As Sam’s training for one of the world’s most famous marathons gets underway, she describes how supporting the College’s fundraising priority acts as a motivator: “I’ve run the London Marathon three times before, but this time it means so much more to be running to raise funds for students in need.”
The Rector’s Scholarship Fund was launched in June 2011 to increase the amount of support available to students in financial need. As the government’s investment in higher education continues to decrease, the need for scholarships and bursaries has become more important than ever. Thanks to the donations of the College’s generous alumni and supporters, the initiative has already helped many more students who win a place at Imperial but may struggle with the cost of coming to university.
On top of building up her fitness and stamina to cover the 26.2 miles of the marathon course, Sam has set herself a further challenge in her preparations. Through events including a quiz for staff, students and alumni, she aims to raise awareness of the Rector’s Scholarship Fund and encourage others to contribute. She says: “We’ve set a target of £5,000 which will go a long way to supporting students through their studies, but if we can top this target the funding will go even further. In fact, I’ll even run in fancy dress if we beat it!”
