Channel 4 and Nature triumph at Imperial’s second Big Science Pub Quiz

Hot on the heels of last week’s Varsity matches at Imperial College London , Wednesday 28 March 2012 saw more fierce competition as journalists, press officers and academics came together in a battle to be crowned champions of Imperial’s second Big Science Pub Quiz.
Science reporters from media outlets including the Times, the Daily Telegraph, Channel 4 News and New Scientist joined press officers from partner organisations and over 50 Imperial researchers to form teams, pit their wits against rivals and make new contacts.
The event, which was run by the Communications and Development Division, was held in the Haemo Globe Inn, a pop-up pub created especially for the occasion on Imperial’s South Kensington campus. The guests were entertained by quiz-master Gareth Mitchell – a lecturer on Imperial’s MSc in Science Communication and presenter of the Imperial College Podcast and BBC World Service’s Click.
The winning team was “Schrodinger’s Cat Flap”, headed by Dr Aldo Faisal from the Department of Bioengineering and featuring members from Channel 4 News and the press office at Nature (full team scores are below).

4th – “Schrodinger’s Lions,” led by Professor Stephen Curry (Cell and Molecular Biology), featuring Physics World (56 points)
5th – “Atomic Mittens,” led by Dr Mary Ryan (Materials), featuring Nature and the Daily Mail (54 points)
6th – “Biological Machines,” led by Professor Richard Kitney (Bioengineering), featuring the Times and Science (53.5 points)
7th – “Fat kids…” led by Dr Oscar Ces (Chemistry), featuring Chemistry World (52.5 points)
8th – “Sluggish Neutrinos,” led by Professor John Tisch (Physics), featuring New Scientist (51.5 points)
9th – “Beta Version,” led by Professor Richard Green (Business School), featuring The Engineer, the Science Media Centre and the press office of the BBSRC (50.5 points)
10th – “Slower than Light,” led by Professor Martin McCall (Physics), featuring the Daily Telegraph and the Press Association (49.5 points)
11th -“TB or not TB,” led by Dr Deirdre Hollingsworth (School of Public Health), featuring Bloomberg, Associated Press and the press offices of the MRC and NIHR (43 points)
12th – “Membrains,” led by Dr Nathan Bartlett (National Heart and Lung Institute), featuring the Daily Mail and the press offices of Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation (41 points)
