Gibson appointed advisor to MOD

Professor Vernon Gibson, who held the Sir Edward Frankland BP Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at Imperial until 2008, became the new Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Defence on 2 July.

Fenwick’s honorary membership

Alan Fenwick, Professor of Tropical Parasitology (Public Health), has been elected as an honorary member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Honorary membership is conferred in recognition of outstanding accomplishment by “an individual not an American citizen who has made eminent contributions to some phase of tropical medicine and hygiene”. Professor Fenwick directs the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) at Imperial. The SCI is a collaborative project to help countries in sub-Saharan Africa control schistosomiasis, a disease caused by parasitic worms, and other neglected tropical diseases.

Space researchers recognised

Dr Jonathan Eastwood and Dr Peter Wass (both Physics) have been awarded medals by the Committee On Space Research (COSPAR), one of the main international space science organisations.

The academics have received the Zeldovich medal, which is awarded (in conjunction with the Russian Academy of Sciences) every two years to young scientists for excellence and achievement in space science: Eastwood for advancing our understanding of the basic physics that underpins geomagnetic storms and space weather, and Wass in the field of fundamental physics in space.

Imperial aids Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has recognised the pivotal role played by Imperial through the Grantham/Imperial partnership, which has enabled them to win the top award at the UK Energy and Environmental Awards.

The Sustainable Business of the Year award acknowledges Sainsbury’s industry-leading work on carbon and energy reduction, as well as its technological innovation.

Royal Society honours

Royal Society medal

Five Imperial scientists were honoured by the Royal Society on 10 July. Emeritus Professor Tom Kibble FRS (Physics) and Emeritus Professor and Distinguished Research Fellow Professor Andrew Holmes FRS (Chemistry) have received the Royal Medal, one of the Society’s premier awards. The Royal Medals were founded by King George IV in 1825 and are awarded to just three top scientists each year.

Bioengineer scoops award

Awards Honors

Research into bone disease has helped an Imperial researcher scoop a top engineering prize from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Dr Alessandra Carriero (Bioengineering) has received the Sir George Macfarlane Award from the Academy for her research into bone fractures and abnormal bone growth. She received the award at the Academy’s AGM in London on 16 July.

IET Challenge winners

Awards Honors

The annual Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Challenge has been won by a group of Imperial physicists, pictured above (L–R): Dr Peter Spencer, PhD student Joe Goodwin, Dr Sophia Khan and Dr Dan Crick, who met at the Postdoc Development Centre’s course Building on the past four years – what next? in May.

The theme of this year’s Challenge was the commercialisation of space. After a five-way tie for first place, a final problem on astronomy led to Imperial’s team winning the tie break. They received a trophy, which will be displayed for the next year in the Kelvin Lounge at Savoy Place in London.

FEAST trial wins BMJ Research Paper of the Year award

The FEAST trial, led by Professor Kath Maitland (Medicine) has won the prestigious British Medical Journal Research Paper of the Year award.

The trial investigated whether fluid resuscitation helps improve the survival of children with shock caused by infectious diseases. The judges unanimously chose the FEAST trial for the award.

2012 AstraZeneca Prize

Professor Jane Mitchell, Head of Cardiothoracic Pharmacology (NHLI) has been awarded the 2012 AstraZeneca Prize for Women in Pharmacology for her work on inflammation in cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

The prize recognises women whose career achievements have contributed significantly to the understanding of a particular field through excellence in research. Professor Mitchell will be awarded the £1,000 prize at a ceremony in December.

PEN/Hessell-Tiltman Prize

Professor David Edgerton (Humanities) has been shortlisted for the 2012 PEN/Hessell-Tiltman Prize for history for his book Britain’s War Machine, published by Allen Lane.

The prize is awarded annually for a book of specifically historical content, not primarily written for the academic market.

Good food awards for Catering

On 15 March, Catering received an award for its participation in Sustainable Fish City – a campaign calling on companies and restaurants to use more sustainable fish sources, which has seen 14 London universities sign up to its pledge.

The Commercial Services Division also won an award for purchasing and promoting sustainable products at the Good Food on the Public Plate awards. The awards were presented at City Hall by journalist Rosie Boycott, Chair of the London Food Board, which advises the Mayor of London on food issues.

Gann chief guest of Tata group

Professor David Gann CBE, Deputy Principal of Research and Business Engagement (Business School), was the chief guest and speaker at the 2012 Tata Innovista regional awards, held at the Taj Lands End Hotel in Mumbai, India, on 29 March.

The contest is a platform for recognising innovative products or service ideas within the Tata group of companies.

Japanese speech contest

Third year students Connie Kou, Wai Shin Ngam and Karen Chong, from the Department of Bioengineering, recently won the Cultural Inheritance Prize in the finals of the Japanese Speech Contest for University Students.

The students, who are studying Japanese in the Department of Humanities, gave a spoken presentation about the Chinese New Year. In addition, a third year Chemistry student, Joel Boom, was selected as a finalist in the Studying Japanese as an Elective or Optional Course category. The annual event, which featured 10 individual speeches and four group presentations, is co-organised by the British Association for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language and the Japan Foundation.

City and Guilds Fellowship

Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, Director of Grantham Institute for Climate Change, was awarded the Fellowship of the City and Guilds of London Institute for his outstanding contribution to the understanding of the effects of manmade climate change and its impact on the environment, at a ceremony which took place on 21 February.
