Knighthoods and a CBE for Imperial researchers

An obesity researcher and a mathematician from Imperial have been awarded knighthoods, and an Imperial chemist has received a CBE, in the 2012 New Year Honours.

Anaesthetic Research Society annual meeting awards

Awards Honors

Fifth year medical students Mervyn Chong, Anthony Fung and Bob Yang, who undertook intercalated BSc projects under the supervision of Dr Daqing Ma, Senior Lecturer (Surgery and Cancer), presented their data at the annual meeting of the Anaesthetic Research Society held at the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) on 28 November 2011.

Mervyn was awarded first place in the RCoA President’s Prize for best undergraduate research project, while Anthony and Bob were both awarded second place.

Initiative rated as one of top two charities for impact

Children in Africa receiving treatment

The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) at Imperial has been rated as one of the top two charities globally for achieving impact with donations by an independent charity evaluator. The American-based non-profit organisation GiveWell rigorously examined hundreds of charities worldwide to identify which have the most impact for each dollar they receive. The Against Malaria Foundation and the SCI were found to be the two charities that allow donors to accomplish as much good as possible with their money.

Government advisor role for Smith

Bell honoured in Italy

Awards Honors

Professor Michael Bell, Professor of Transport Operations (Civil and Environmental Engineering), was honoured by the Italian Society of Transportation Scholars (SIDT) at their annual conference in Venice on 7 October.

He was invited to be an Emeritus Member of SIDT. Professor Bell has contributed to a wide range of research projects focussed on developing transport networks, including evaluating the impact of congestion charging in London and working on a Swiss national travel model of Toronto.

Smith elected to German academy

Awards Honors

Professor Geoffrey Smith (Medicine) has been elected to membership of the Leopoldina, the German national academy of sciences.

The Leopoldina, the world’s oldest academy of natural sciences, has around 1,400 members who are chosen on the basis of academic excellence. Professor Smith’s research focuses on the interactions between viruses and the host cell and immune system.
