Mini profile: Rob Gross

4 April 2012

Mini profile

Reporter speaks to Dr Rob Gross about the many ‘hats’ that he wears at Imperial. In particular, his role as Policy Director at the Energy Futures Lab (EFL) and his penchant for fast(ish) things.

What are some of your roles here at Imperial?

I am the Director for the Centre for Energy Policy and Technology, Head of the UK Energy Research Centre’s Technology and Policy assessment function, Convenor of the Energy Policy option and Thesis Term Director of the MSc Environmental Technology course at Imperial.

Can you describe your role at the EFL?

The key aim of my role is to investigate the economic potential of new technologies, such as solar and wind power. Understanding the economic dimension is the key to energy research. It also helps inform governments, so that they can adopt effective policies that put our energy usage on a more sustainable path.

What are you working on?

A recent EFL project with the UK Energy Research Centre looks at why the overall cost of offshore wind has gone up. We found that problems include bottlenecks in the supply chain, currency fluctuations and a rise in commodity prices. More widely, we’re looking at the future costs of gas, nuclear and other renewables.

Is it true that you are a car enthusiast?

Well, yes, admittedly it’s not a very green hobby, but I do have a 1965 Austin Healey Sprite in the garage at home. It doesn’t work at the moment and it has been off the road for about 10 years. Like most Imperial academics, you juggle a number of roles.

How do you do it?

All academics have to combine teaching, research and engagement with the wider community as part of their job and it is a constant juggling task. That’s probably why I haven’t had a chance to put the Sprite back together yet.

National nature project scoops Lottery Award

7 November 2011

OPAL photo

The Open Air Laboratories project (OPAL) has been recognised as one of the UK’s best environmental projects at the National Lottery Awards 2011 in London on 5 November.

Led by Dr Linda Davies and a team from Imperial’s Centre for Environmental Policy, OPAL outshone hundreds of other projects to take home a runner-up trophy at a ceremony broadcast live on BBC One and available to view on iPlayer until 12 November 2011.

On accepting the award, Dr Davies said: “We are absolutely delighted to have our project recognised with this award. Through OPAL, we are developing a new generation of nature-lovers, not just children and young people, but also adults who haven’t had the opportunities to get involved with nature.

“I’d like to thank my team for all their hard work and the communities across the country who have made OPAL such a huge success. A big thank you to the Lottery too for making this all possible.”

OPAL is a nationwide initiative that inspires communities to discover, enjoy and protect their local environments while working alongside top scientists and contributing to national scientific research. Partners include the Natural History Museum, the Met Office, universities and voluntary groups. Lottery funding has paid for an OPAL community scientist to be based in every region, working with some of the most deprived communities in England.

The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects. All the projects entered in the competition had already received Lottery funding and the Awards recognise the difference that these projects make to local communities, and celebrate the achievements of the people behind them.
