Ideas worth spreading

Across the College – in lecture theatres, in hallways and in common rooms – ideas flow like oxygen. Imperial staff and students believe in the power of ideas to benefit society; a vision shared by the founders of the not-for-profit organisation TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design), which is the driving force behind the first TEDxImperialCollege event to be held on 24 March.

Seven EPSRC Fellowships

Researchers receive over €12 million in grants from the European Research Council

Seedcamp Week 2011

Last month, 400 investors and marketing gurus from high profile companies, such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook, eBay and Twitter, came to Imperial to take part in Seedcamp Week. Hosted by Imperial College Business School and the Department of Computing, the event linked up new entrepreneurs with industry experts from across Europe.

Postgrad housing opens its doors

13 October 2011

Griffon Studios

The first residents of the brand new postgraduate accommodation complex for Imperial students began moving in last week. Griffon Studios is a development of 566 studios in Battersea, which was developed by the College together with Berkeley First. Its aim is to expand the limited provision of accommodation available to postgraduates in London, with priority given to Imperial students.

Harvest festivals in Russia

Cross Culture

Mrs Marina Hall, Research Group Secretary (Computing), moved to the UK 10 years ago from one of Russia’s Siberian cities, Tomsk. One of her most vivid memories of her childhood is of staying with her grandmother every summer for three months in a village called Batyrovo in the area of Altay, which Marina remembers as being small, friendly and close knit. She recalls the harvest festivals she experienced there, which were started by local villagers hundreds of years ago.

Katherine Gray: starter profile

Katherine Gray

Katherine Gray first came to Imperial as an undergraduate studying Physics, followed by an MRes in Bioimaging Sciences. She joins the College staff as a research assistant in the Department of Computing, where work will involve her doctoral research on the imaging of Alzheimer’s disease. She says: “The interdisciplinary culture here is great. I work with medics and physicists who bring different viewpoints.”

Computer whiz’s work wows readership

7 March 2011

Awards HonorsA paper written by Dr Natasa Przulj (Computing) that describes a software tool for analysing large networks, is currently listed as the second most accessed study in the journal BMC Bioinformatics. The paper describes a computer tool called Graphcrunch, which Dr Przulj has developed to analyse different types of networks, including transport, biological and social.

Phones for the future

Orange's Ashraf Hegab speaking to studentsTwo members of the team from Orange Innovation Labs dropped into Imperial on 31 January, to challenge MSc students to design an innovative and inspired new mobile phone application. The labs are the hub for the development of new products and technology for the telecommunications company, Orange.
