Course review: Presentations for interviews: practice and feedback

4 May 2012

Dr Karl Smith

By course attendee Dr Karl Smith, Research Associate (Civil and Environmental Engineering)

Why did you go on the course?

Delivering presentations is increasingly becoming a standard part of job interviews. My research contract is nearing its end, so I’m currently immersed in the job application and interview process. My key aspiration was that this course would help to maximise my recruitment prospects.

What did you learn?

I received some very constructive feedback on how I could address the weaker aspects of my presentation approach and delivery. Watching and, moreover, critiquing the other attendees’ practice presentations gave me a strong grasp of what should engage an assessment panel.

What element of the course did you find the most helpful?

A crucial element was that each presentation was filmed. Consequently, we could watch video playbacks of our performances: this gave us a revealing insight into our individual tics, some of which were shown to be alarmingly distracting. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to fellow postdocs pursuing gainful future employment.

Course review: Leadership and Management Development Programme

4 April 2012

Dr Joanna Shearer

By course attendee Dr Joanna Shearer, Head of International Student Recruitment and Marketing (International Office)

Why did you go on the course?

When I was recruited to this newly developed student recruitment role three years ago, I was new to management. I had done a lot of teaching and thought it might be similar, but after a few months I realised it required a completely different set of skills.

What did you learn?

This has been the ideal course for me, as, over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to develop a new team from scratch. Everything I needed to do, from thinking about what roles I required, conducting recruitment and selection, to setting objectives for PRDPs and managing successful teams, has been contained within the course.

How has it been helpful in your role?

I hope this programme has allowed me to give my team the freedom in their roles that they deserve, whilst engaging them as a team to achieve common goals. I am incredibly proud of what they have accomplished over the past few years, and of their contributions and insight to the international student recruitment strategy.

Managing your Imperial College Event

28 May 2010

Course Review

By course attendee Ben Latham, Senior Executive – Individual Giving (Alumni and Development)

Why did you go on the course?

I was keen learn how to improve upon the events I manage at Imperial, such as the
Legacy Lunch – a fundraising event where prospective donors are invited to 170 Queen’s Gate to have lunch with the Rector. Even though the event is well-established (now in its fifth year), I thought I might glean some nuggets of information that might add to the overall success of the event.

Writing up your research for publication

10 March 2010

Course Review

By course attendee Adriana Cornea, Postdoctoral Fellow, Finance and Accounting Group, Business School.

Why did you go on the course?

Good research results and great ideas can remain unnoticed and be rejected, if you don’t know how to communicate them to the scientific community, even from your own research field. I needed a model to follow, as writing the first few articles can be quite painful and time consuming at the beginning of an academic career.
