This month, seven Olympic triathlon teams, including 23 of the highest ranking triathletes in the world, will be arriving at Imperial to train in Ethos, just a few minutes away from the Olympic course in Hyde Park. Reporter asked the experts for an insider’s view of Britain’s fastest growing sport.

More Olympic teams to train at Ethos

The pool at Ethos

Four more national teams of triathletes will be training at Imperial’s swimming pool in the Ethos sports centre on the South Kensington Campus during the Olympics.

Ireland, Canada, Brazil and New Zealand will join the British, Swiss, French, Japanese and Australian triathlete teams using the pool in the run up to the women’s triathlon on 4 August and the men’s triathlon on 7 August.

Double Paralympic champion trains at Imperial

British paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds (pictured right with Neil Mosley, Assistant Director of Commercial Services), was at South Kensington Campus on 27 March to train in the swimming pool at Imperial’s Ethos sports centre during a trip to London.

Olympic dreams

Reporter met up with Hannah Bryars, Olympic fencing hopeful and 5th year medic, to find out about her training and her determination to make the grade.

Hannah’s training as a member of the GB fencing team took a hit last year when she suffered from a painful knee injury and had to take time out to help reduce the inflammation. As her condition improved, rather than give up on her goal to compete in the Olympics, she returned to training with a renewed sense of purpose, switching coach, turning to a gluten-free diet and strengthening her knee through physiotherapy and Bikram Yoga.

Imperial gets set

Olympic cyclists

Next July, as you tuck into your morning muesli in the SCR or work up a sweat in Ethos, the tracksuited person eating or powering the treadmill alongside you might just be an Olympian. With events for the London 2012 games happening on the College’s doorstep in Hyde Park and Earl’s Court, Imperial will be hosting a number of Olympic teams on the South Kensington Campus. Reporter finds out how the College is gearing up for the challenge.

Team spirit

Imperial turns Japanese for Sanka Day

Gym goers yesterday might have been forgiven for thinking storm clouds had gathered over Ethos, thanks to the rolls of thunder echoing through the building. In fact the source of the noise was a group of primary schoolchildren, who had taken up their drumsticks to try playing ancient Japanese drums known as taiko.

Q and A with Tim Brabants

Tim Brabants

Dr Tim Brabants MBE was a special guest at the launch of Imperial’s transformed gym and took part in demonstrations with the new equipment. Tim won the first ever kayaking Gold for Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics in the 1,000m sprint event. He also won two bronze medals at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 for the individual kayak 500m and 1000m.

Tim gained a medical degree from the University of Nottingham and inbetween sporting commitments he has practised in the emergency department at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, and as a trackside doctor at Donnington Park. Reporter spoke to him about his training, his career and his thoughts on the Energia gym

Every Wednesday afternoon, the labs and lecture theatres clear out and Beit Quad and Ethos on the South Kensington Campus come alive with hundreds of students carrying an array of footballs, lacrosse sticks and other sporting paraphernalia as they make their way to training and their weekly matches. Reporter delves into the world of team sports at Imperial.
