New tools for lecturers

26 July 2012

Imperial academics will soon have access to a system allowing them to record their lectures and make video tutorials.

The initiative, which is being rolled out over the next three years, will enable staff to record their lectures and presentations, enhancing the quality of material shared online with students. It seeks to address suggestions from students in Imperial College Union’s response to the 2011 National Student Survey report, in which students requested a College-wide approach to capturing lectures.

Meet the reader: Scott Heath, President, Imperial College Union

4 April 2012

Scott Heath

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m reading my copy of Reporter to Mike the Micrometer – the Union mascot made of gun metal which normally resides under my desk! Micrometers are used to accurately measure wires and other components. It was created in 1966 and is deliberately heavy to make it difficult to steal!

Yes man?

Earlier this month, I saw Imperial College Union President, Scott Heath, give a presentation about what he had learnt from his time in the role. He talked about following the ethos of the film Yes Man, where Jim Carrey plays a man who challenges himself to say ‘yes’ to everything for a year, with the aim of seizing and creating as many opportunities as possible. Scott reported that saying yes to even the most random of opportunities has resulted in unexpected benefits for the Union and Imperial students. Listening to Scott, it occurred to me that we could all benefit from being more open to new ideas. For me, I could embrace some of the more daring suggestions on my features planner and participate in the College’s juggling club, despite my lack of coordination, or beat my fear of extreme sports sessions and train with Imperial’s Olympic hopefuls at the crack of dawn. I think it’s time to start saying yes and see what adventures this change of attitude takes us on.

Social Feast

This month I was reminded just how much the Imperial community loves food. At the cake sale in aid of Children in Need last week (see Meet the reader), the tables of iced and baked treats disappeared in under half an hour. (more…)

Felix: The tale behind the cat

4 November 2011

First issue

To mark the 1,500th issue of Felix, published on 4 November 2011, we look back at the newspaper’s history. The following article was first published in Imperial Matters, spring 2010, as Felix celebrated its 60th anniversary.

On 9 December 1949 a new student publication, Felix, appeared on news stands around the Imperial College London campus. The first editorial explained its raison d’être: “The need has been felt for some time for a frequently published journal to comment upon the affairs of the College whilst they are still topical”.

Celebrating the Jewish High Holidays

1 November 2011

An apple and honey - which symbolises a 'sweet new year'

Last month 65 students participated in an event to mark the Jewish High Holidays held at the Imperial College Union Dining Hall. The Jewish High Holidays include Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), and the Day of Atonement, (Yom Kippur). At the event students shared their New Year resolutions on how they can help the world. These discussions were followed by a dinner.

“The High Holidays are about new beginnings, about renewal and about focusing towards a good year in the future,” said Rabbi Mendy Loewenthal, director of Chabad of South Kensington – a Jewish organisation which offers university students a chance to connect with their religion.

New Imperial College Union sabbatical team elected

18 May 2011

Election results

The Imperial College Union sabbatical team for 2011–12 was announced on 14 March, following elections held during the spring term. Taking up sabbatical positions from 1 August are: Scott Heath, President; Monya Zard, Deputy President (Clubs and Societies); Michael Foster, Deputy President (Finance and Services); Jason Parmar, Deputy President (Education); Nicolas Massie, Deputy President (Welfare) and Matt Colvin (Felix Editor).

Speaking of his delight at the results, Union President Designate, Scott Heath, said:

“It feels great to get the support of so many students to become their President and it is a role I am looking forward to performing. I hope my sabbatical team will build upon the working relationships I have developed as Royal College of Science Union (RCSU) President, and that it will be a year where we continue to communicate the value of the Union, expand our commercial capacity and actively encompass the newly formed mission statement and targets.”

Turnout at the election was high, with 5,033 out of around 15,000 students voting – 32.5 per cent of the overall student body. The number of votes represents an increase of nearly 50 per cent compared with the 2010 sabbatical elections and [recorded] turnout among the highest in UK universities’ students’ unions this year.

Reporter will be interviewing the new sabbatical team later in the summer.
