Meet the reader: Nicola Pogson, Head of Alumni Relations (Business School)

30 July 2012

Nicola Pogson

What are you doing in the picture?

I’ve volunteered to be one of 8,000 official London Ambassadors, so I’m checking out Hyde Park, which is where I’ll be stationed for six days in August.

What would you do if you were editor of Reporter for a day?

I would take advantage of my journalist status to go up the Queen’s Tower, which has been a goal since I joined Imperial. Then I’d tweet and Facebook my appreciation for Sir John Betjeman, the English Poet Laureate who helped save it from demolition in the 1960s.

Who would be your cover star?

I’d profile one of our inspiring alumni like Chioma Onyenwe (MSc Management 2011), a young film entrepreneur. She helped fundraise for the Rector’s Scholarship Fund, and was so inspired by the experience that she’s helping to establish an alumni and fundraising office for her university in Nigeria..

Meet the reader: Jo Seed, PA and Project Administrator (Environmental Policy)

22 June 2012

Jo Seed

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m in Prince’s Gate Gardens behind our Centre for Environmental Policy offices. It’s so nice working in London but still being able to enjoy the greenery – we even have a local fox! I hope all the staff who are moving here from Mechanical Engineering will enjoy the space this summer.

Meet the reader: Dr Manel Torres, Academic Visitor (Chemical Engineering)

3 May 2012

Dr Manel Torres

What are you doing in the picture?

I am in the V&A cafe. I find this place relaxing and inspiring. I come here sometimes to think and sometimes to talk, particularly when I have visitors from overseas companies.

What would you do if you were editor of Reporter?

I would devote a small section to materials research here at the College. I’m sure there would always be something interesting to talk about, from fashion to biomaterials. I would also launch an edition of Reporter that people could read on their tablets and smartphones.

Who would your front cover star be?

It would have to be Lady Gaga, wearing the ‘Chemist Tailor’s’ dress we made for her in the Department of Chemical Engineering out of Fabrican’s spray-on fabric. Her stylist contacted us in February and commissioned it but I’m still waiting to see a photo of it!

Meet the reader: Scott Heath, President, Imperial College Union

4 April 2012

Scott Heath

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m reading my copy of Reporter to Mike the Micrometer – the Union mascot made of gun metal which normally resides under my desk! Micrometers are used to accurately measure wires and other components. It was created in 1966 and is deliberately heavy to make it difficult to steal!

Meet the reader: Rajandeep Singh, International Officer

19 March 2012

Rajandeep Singh

What are you doing in the picture?

I am with one of the Rector’s Ambassadors, Kavita Aggarwal (Medicine), who joined me for a student recruitment fair in Cyprus. I met a lot of students with seven A-levels who were worried that they didn’t have enough work experience to study at Imperial!

Meet the reader

23 December 2011

LuccaLucca Da Silva Junior, Campus Receptionist (Security Services)

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m standing by the Christmas tree in the Main Entrance on the South Kensington Campus where I work. I meet so many different people in my role – not only staff and students. I speak to tourists wanting to know more about the design of the building and schoolchildren asking questions like, “Did the Queen really visit the College for its centenary?” I make sure I am clued up on facts about Imperial.

What would you do if you were editor of Reporter for a day?

I’d organise a social trip to Richmond Park and get staff and their families to come along, then interview people about their day. I think there should be more College social activities, so staff can get to know each other.

Who would be your cover star?

The Imperial College Gospel Choir performed at the X Factor final – it would be great to feature a picture of them on the stage!

Meet the reader: Katherine Bayliss, Management Trainee

25 November 2011

Katherine Bayliss

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m surrounded by edible goodies, including a chocolate cherry cake I made, at a cake sale in the Faculty Building. The sale was in aid of Children in Need and was organised by Liz Howard, Executive Officer to the Deputy Rector. We raised £206.36!

Meet the reader: Louise Lindsay, Director of Human Resources

16 September 2011

Louise Lindsay and her family

What are you doing in the picture?

I am with my family at a theme park near Barcelona called Port Aventura. There were some pretty intense rollercoasters there – one had 10 loops, another was so fast and furious that it shook my watch off and I lost it! The log flume was one of the tamer rides that I could smuggle Reporter onto for a relaxing break!

Meet the reader: Amit Mistry, shop assistant, Union Newsagents

18 July 2011

Amit Mistry

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m reading Reporter in front of the pick ’n’ mix section of the shop, where I’ve been working while I study for my Mechanical Engineering degree – it’s good part-time work and a way to earn some extra income. Pick ‘n’ mix is very popular with the customers but I have to be careful that I don’t eat too much! Every day I allow myself to buy just five or six chocolate-covered peanuts.

Meet the reader: Sima Siziba, Fitness Instructor at Ethos gym

1 July 2011

Sima Siziba

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m reading my copy of Reporter in the studio after my fitness classes. I teach body sculpt, which is a combination of high and low low-impact exercises using free weights, step and floor mats. I get a pretty good turn-out, with more than 25 people showing up most weeks. It’s a great class if you want to work hard and achieve results!

Meet the reader: Liz Howard, College Headquarters

9 June 2011

Meet the reader

What are you doing in the picture?

I’m eating my lunch in the ‘secret garden’ behind Linstead Hall. I always try to get away from my desk for lunch when the weather’s nice.

What would you do if you were editor of Reporter for a day?

I’d take the opportunity to find out about an area of the College that I really don’t know much about, like the evening classes provided by the Department of Humanities. I’ve been meaning to do one of their classes ever since I started, but never quite got round to it!

Who would be your cover star?

I think it would be the guys from the Postdoc Development Centre. I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many positive comments about any team, from people all around the College. Plus, they make these snazzy desk calendars that I find really useful, so it would be a nice thank you to them!

Meet the Reader: Marcus Rees-Roberts, Development Manager (Communications and Development)

16 May 2011

Marcus Rees-Roberts

What are you doing in the picture?

I was visiting the Great Wall of China on a day off from an eight-day work trip to Asia. I was accompanying the Rector, Professor Yi-Ke Guo (Computing) and Professor Chris Toumazou (Electrical and Electronic Engineering), and other members of my Division to run the first Rector-hosted events for Imperial alumni in Beijing and Taipei. Seeing the Wall snake off into the distance was a sight I had always wanted to see, but it was ridiculously busy for the first few hundred yards. It’s only when you get beyond most people’s turning point that it thins out and becomes more manageable. From the little I saw of Beijing, I really liked it and would like to go back in my own time one day. There is loads to see and the place has a great buzz about it.
