Open Day insights

4 July 2011

Mary Dai

Imperial held its annual Science and Engineering Open Day on 30 June, attended by 2200 prospective students and 1200 parents. Reporter caught up with Mary Dai from Stratford Upon Avon who plans to study either Computer Science or Mathematics at university to gauge her thoughts about the day.

What were your impressions of Imperial before you came?

I was worried the Open Day would be full of people from Eton and I’ve been really surprised – it’s not snobby at all – everyone has been really friendly.

What have you been impressed by?

I was really impressed with the student presentations in the Mathematics lecture – you could see they really enjoyed what they did and wanted to tell us about it.

Have you been surprised by anything you have seen?

It’s a bit scary thinking about living with lots of people but the accommodation was really tidy and everything looked lovely and it didn’t feel like people would steal your food!

What have you learnt?

I was worried that I would need to know everything before I came to university but the tutors and academics seem so approachable and willing to help when topics are difficult.

What would you tell your friends about Imperial?

Go to Imperial! A lot of people up north are worried about the idea of going to a city university and prefer a countryside setting but it is lovely here.
