Student blogger Keou on the British summer:

This London weather is literally driving me INSANE! I take the tube to university, it’s raining… I get out of the tube, it’s sunny! Go to class, get out of class, it’s hailstones, then back to rain, then sun again! If you are looking to study in England, get ready for some intense weather change! I really think the UK is the only country where you can experience the four seasons in one day! Oh well… I just have to live with it!”

Student blogger Ali on the perfect supervisor:

“Before I started my PhD, colleagues in labs I worked in described a student’s perception of their supervisor much like Marmite. You either love them, or hate them. This can be true, but it depends on one major factor: what you are looking for in a supervisor. There are a couple of people I think would make good supervisors: 1) Mr Miyagi from Karate Kid: How AWESOME would it be if there was a ‘WAX ON, WAX OFF’ equivalent to science. ‘PIPETTE UP, PIPETTE DOWN. CLONE IN, CLONE OUT!’ 2) YODA from Star Wars: Imagine that you don’t just have any supervisor? Nope, you have the oldest and most wisest of supervisors.”

Student blogger David on getting lost in his dissertation:

“About an hour ago, I thought it was Wednesday. In fact, I only just realised it was Tuesday. In the past two days I’ve written 4,300 words of my dissertation, as well as processed a bunch of results and read more literature than I probably should have. It’s good that I’m getting it done, but I’m also wondering why I didn’t do this much earlier! My dissertation, by the way, is studying the response of online communities sceptical about evidence of global warming. It’s interesting, and no-one has looked at it before, but gee, it’s been bringing me into close contact with people whose views are quite extreme. Mentally exhausting!”

Student blogger Dawn on things I’ve learnt this year

Apart from the obvious learning of geology stuff, such as the difference between biotite and muscovite mica, I’ve also learnt so much more! I’ve also found out that a lot of the fears I had at the start of the year (mainly revolving around ending up with no friends and spending the entire weekend on my own, sitting in my room with nothing to do) were the same for a lot of other people… So, looking back, I have actually developed so much as a person for coming to university, coming here is the best decision I have ever made!

Student blogger Charlotte on the royal occasion

“Many students wanted to get back before the Royal Wedding. As for me, I went to Green Park together with Richard and Nicolas to watch it on the big screens. I had originally planned to go to Hyde Park, but seeing the amount of people on their way there, I was happy ending up in Green Park instead. It was nice seeing everyone in such a festive mood, and also seeing how empty the streets of London can get. When God Save the Queen started everyone stood up and sang along, waving flags at the end. Most impressive is how these events become an occasion for the people, with all the happy faces.”

Student blogger Charlotte on the scent of home:

“It’s not unusual to hear people saying, “You don’t know what you’ll miss until you actually leave”, and this was something that became clear to me last term. I knew I would miss stuff from Sweden but it was hard to tell what. I never expected it to be lingonsylt (raw stirred lingonberries, usually served with things like meatballs), crisp bread and lussebullar [a soft, saffronscented bun stuffed with raisins]. I had a surprise when I returned home – the thing that has reminded me of my absence more than anything else – was the rediscovery of familiar smells, like my mom’s food. This is how I know I’m home.”
