This year, IC Radio covered the JPR Williams Cup match at Varsity 2013. The first time the station covered the match was 4 years ago, and according to former station manager Dan Fowler, it was “absolute chaos”. With those words of encouragement, off we went, armed with a few microphones and a Union minibus.

Media Party Bus driven by yours truly, accompanied by a generous amount of Taylor Swift.

I was driving the bus, hilariously, as the only executive media member old enough to qualify (over 21) with a full EU licence for more than two years. You don’t have to have a minibus licence for the Union training – the minibuses operate under a special permit scheme that allow you to drive their vehicles if you have passed the Union’s tests. Driving to Varsity was really fun actually – only downside was that I had to wait until we got back to Imperial to crack out the Corona!

STOIC, Imperial’s TV station, were the first to get the ball rolling on the Varsity Media extravaganza. They filmed a pre-match team line-up, that you can check out here on Youtube, and coordinated with Sport Imperial to get access to the Stoop in Twickenham for filming and wifi for IC Radio and Felix. Being all friendly and cosy in our homes down in West Basement, I heard what STOIC were up to and figured IC Radio would jump on the bandwagon this year, surreptitiously sweeping the dust off our OB (Outside Broadcasting) equipment and crossing our fingers. We booked a bus under the Media Management Group and tottered off to Harlington sports ground on the morning of the 13th of March (stopping off at Sainsburies for Coke and cookies along the way).

We decided that we wouldn’t overexert ourselves too much this year, and just do live coverage of the rugby match at the Stoop in the evening, so during the morning at Harlington we helped out STOIC with their filming of the different matches and sports, and did some spot radio interviewing along the way to play out before the match. I even got strapped into a hefty steadicam outfit and pretended to be professional whilst filming hockey and football and other sports I know nothing about.

Celebrating St. Patrick's day, one of few days that it was good to be Irish during this year's 6 Nations.

The Stoop is the home of the Harlequins rugby team whom, incidentally, my home team Munster enjoyed a comfortable victory over a few weekends ago. Normally, I deplore the behaviour of those lording their team’s victory over another, but after a disastrous 6 Nations campaign, our Heineken cup dreams of the glory days of 2006 and 2008 are all I have left.

Setting up at the Stoop was fairly uneventful – STOIC had a few cameras stationed around the stadium, and IC Radio set up on the opposite to the supporters seats, so you could hear the crowd in the background but it wasn’t too overwhelming. We had four microphones, a laptop, and a mixer outside for us presenters, nothing too technical, and inside the luxury room behind us, our Technical Manager-elect Max had the broadcasting running through his own laptop, with a back-up to our constant music service back at the station in case we lost the feed. It worked out really well, we managed to get all the match and a bit of pre-match banter in, although I slightly misjudged the recording time and the first part of the recorded show online is music. Still, a good learning experience for next year!

Face for radio indeed.

As there were a good few of us around, pretty much everyone had a go at presenting and commentating on the match. Commentator King turned out to be STOIC president Jonny, whose rugby knowledge and instinct far outstripped my own (he is a die-hard Harlequins supporter, and doubtlessly their defeat at the hands of my home-team Munster is still haunting him). We also managed to hijack his wireless microphone feed and get some audio of him interviewing the players after the match. The inter-society love in the media group is really a peak these days – now all we need is a scandal of some sort to restore the natural order… Just kidding lads, please don’t take the toys away!

Station Manager-elect George poking around looking important.

Our varsity coverage can be heard on IC Radio here. It may be a little biased due to a lack of medic presenters, but that and a few minor sound blips will hopefully be rectified next year… I’m definitely proud of our efforts, and glad that I got a chance cover a college-wide event during my time as president. Probably the best thing about IC Radio is how much I’ve learned in a practical sense – just a few years ago the equipment that we use would have defeated me despite my engineering stance. Three years later and I’m still learning about production and sound engineering! However, the most awesome part of the day was probably getting a Tweet from a listener in Australia enjoying the coverage:

This one from WillyPrince the next day also kinda made it worthwhile:

I think this probably best describes my face when I saw it:

As if we didn’t harass them enough at the PRS event, I even tweeted him back with another sly invitation to visit the uni again for a gig:

Even my brother got in on the action, bless him.

In other Aislinn-related news, we managed to get our computer program working today for our project in HCARD, Human Centred Design of Assistive and Rehabilitation Devices, after a long and epic struggle with C++ that was caused by one missing line of code. Aside from that, anyone in bioengineering 2nd year or mechanical engineering 3rd year, definitely consider taking this course next year, it’s awesome (and 100% coursework based!).

All in all, it’s been an excellent day. #cantwaitforvarsitytomorrow #itmightbetimetogetmyowntwitteraccount #isthishowhashtagsworkihavenoidea

PS – My housemate just pointed out that I’ve linked in my blog a link to Dr Brian May’s blog which links back to my blog. Somebody get Leo here quick.

I’m not being dramatic, but I think my life probably peaked sometime around 4pm last Tuesday afternoon. Am I too young to say that? Maybe, but to be honest, shaking hands with rock legends Brian May and Roger Taylor is most likely the coolest thing that will happen to me in my life.

Roger Taylor, IC Radio Station Manager-elect George Butcher, and myself, lovin' life. Photo taken by Slobodan Radosavljevic.

So why were one half of one of the most influential rock bands in history at our humble Imperial College Union? Well, PRS for Music is the company that provides licences to all public establishments to play copyrighted music, and then distributes the royalties to the songwriters, publishers, and composers of this music. For example, IC Radio buys a licence from PRS every year for the music that we play. Anyway, since 2009 PRS has been awarding UK superbands with Heritage Awards to commemorate the location of their first performance. Turns out Queen’s first London gig was in our very own Union Concert Hall! The plaque is going to have a brief stint at Metric before it’s placed permanently on Prince Consort Road for all the world to see, have a looksie below.

Photo taken by Slobodan Radosavljevic.

The unveiling was attended by Queen guitarist Dr Brian May, who holds an undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from Imperial and completed his PhD in astrophysics in 2007, and drummer Roger Taylor, who met May through an advert for a drummer on a noticeboard in the Union. Needless to say, this caused great excitement throughout the college, and when IC Radio received an invitation to attend the press event, the committee got the closest it has ever gotten to complete barbarity. We had an application and vote based process to decide who would attend, and luckily for me and my blog, myself and the next president-elect of IC Radio, George Butcher, were chosen to attend. Enter my first ever press pass!

Some very elegant speeches were made by Union president Paul Beaumont, the chair for PRS Guy Fletcher OBE, and of course, Brian and Roger themselves. When the floor was opened up for Q&A, George stuck his hand straight up and I threw the IC Radio sign up in the air, and we made ourselves look so ridiculously eager that they really had no choice but to call on us. Check out my radio show to hear the full audio of George’s hilariously brave invitation to Queen to pop down for a live session at IC Radio, and also check out the sound bite that we recorded of Brian May endorsing IC Radio!

Photo taken by Slobodan Radosavljevic.

We wandered around the venue when we had exhausted our time with Brian May and Roger Taylor, and actually met some incredibly interesting people along the way. Audio editing is still ongoing, but we interviewed Queen’s Universal Music Group representative, some hard-core fans who’ve never missed a gig or tour and subsequently get invites to all these special events, PRS chair Guy Fletcher OBE, and even Imperial College’s Press and Communications officer Lucy Handford who sent us the invitation in the first place. As if that wasn’t enough, we cemented our place in IC Radio legend by getting the official IC Radio sign autographed by May, and an original vinyl signed by both May and Taylor.

This will be my final year as IC Radio president, next year I’m taking the back seat and going for supporting actress in Assistant Station Manager. We even had our AGM on the evening after this event where George was elected for next year, so it was an amazing experience for me to “end” on and for George to start out on. But never fear! My final year in bioengineering (assuming I can squeeze my way past the rest of this year of course) might have to take priority over my radio aspirations for now, but I will forever treasure this image of us rockin’ with the Croc in our grown-up clothes at our official press event.

Of course, I wasn’t the only one there. Read George’s excellent account of the day here! And of course, the old reliable student newspaper Felix covered it too! But if you still don’t believe me… Check out Dr Brian May’s own blog post! Long live the Croc indeed.

Hi all! Oh my lord this term has absolutely flown, I can’t believe it’s been 7 weeks since my last post!! My apologies to all loyal blog readers out there – I haven’t forgotten about you!

So what have I been doing all this time? Well, a full-time engineering degree does come with its perks, lectures and coursework galore. Geek that I am, I’ve managed to get my hands on a Raspberry Pi for one of my projects, so I’ve been doing my best to learn Linux and as much computer programming as I can cram into my brain. That’s one of the great things about 3rd year bioengineering (and indeed, it’s true for most courses) – there’s a lot of freedom in individual coursework and project work, so you can really hone in on your interests from 1st and 2nd year. I went for programming. And, yes I do own this t-shirt. Haters gon’ hate.

Apart from uni work, I’ve been pretty busy with the radio station, IC Radio. I’ll put up a big post about our recent exploits soon, including meeting Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, our AGM where I passed the presidential torch in favour of a less demanding role as Assistant Station Manager for next year, and preparing for our Elections coverage with STOIC and Varsity coverage next week. I even learned how to drive the minibus!

So sit tight, the best is yet to come – and don’t forget to tune into our special Elections commentary tonight, featuring yours truly, from 7pm on www.icradio.com!

During the autumn term I had 10 scheduled hours on my timetable, split between the Bioengineering and Electrical Engineering departments. Compared to last year’s timetable, it was absolutely heavenly! This term, I have 12 scheduled hours, but a lot of my spare time so far has been spent on coursework, my group project, and keeping up appearances at the radio station.

Even though I had a lot less scheduled hours in first term, 6-8 hours of each week was dedicated to my group project, and even more this semester. During the first week of autumn term, the department gave us a list of available projects from various supervisors, and left it up to us to organise groups of between 2 and 6 people to choose our top three projects. Although the department recommends that you pick your groups based on project, I’m a firm believer in the importance of a good group dynamic. After I landed myself in a group with 3 other girls (which baffled many of the supervisors we met), we discussed our top projects with the project supervisors and their PhD students. We managed to find one that we were all happy with and it’s going pretty well. Moral of the story, pick a good group and a good project will inevitably follow!

My co-host and housemate, Craig, and me, posing for The Financial Times.

What with all the extra time that I had, I got myself a part-time job at the now-closed postgraduate bar at Imperial, the Holland Club. I usually worked two evenings a week, but by the end of term I felt the strain when coursework deadlines and tests piled up. However, at the start of term I also attended the Union training to work as a steward, and I can also get training to work at the bar, both of which are more shift-orientated and will be hopefully be a better way to fit making money around my studies. Keep an eye on the Union website for information about training throughout the year!

Long live the Croc, the IC Radio mascot!

I do miss the bar work, but I’ve been able to dedicate a little bit more time to IC Radio. This term is when societies decide on a budget and organise elections for the next academic year. Seeing as next year (fingers crossed!) will be my final year as an undergraduate at Imperial, this is my last year as president of IC Radio, so I’m doing my best to finish off with a bang and make sure everything is set up for the next crew. New speakers, drumkit, crocodile costume, bang!

All in all, it’s been a decent couple of weeks back to uni. Exams are finished, coursework isn’t too hard yet, and there’s still holiday money leftover for Nando’s and pizza. Student life really isn’t so bad.

Today kids, I’m going to tell you a bit about my first trip to the A&E. I know that I’m incredibly lucky to have never gone before, but going on my own here in London without my mom was a bit strange and my experience might reassure other international mothers out there. This happened a few months ago, but I’ve just finished my Christmas exams and have a bit more time to dedicate to blogging, so here goes!

I turned 21 last November, and to celebrate this momentous occasion, I had a big joint party back in Ireland with my friend Karen. We held it over the Halloween weekend, so, naturally, I was Superwoman. Six of my London friends came over as well, and one of them borrowed the lion costume that I won at Rebel Bingo last year. It was pretty tense as to who had the better costume:

All in all, it was an amazing weekend, and a great way to kick off unofficial adulthood. However, it came with a catch. About a week or two before the big shindig, I had fallen over while running and sprained my ankle pretty badly. My ankle swelled up to the size of a lemon, and I had bruises running all along the side of my foot for about a month. So, I was a bit of a pathetic Superwoman, what with the crutches and all.

When I tore my foot up, it was late and I was due to go to Southampton the next morning with Imperial’s TV station, Stoic, to film the exhibition of the James Bond vehicles at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum. (Check out the awesome result of that filming here!) So, a bit negligently, I didn’t go to the A&E department until the following evening after returning from Southampton. Not too much damage was done however – they gave me a wheelchair to cruise around in for the day (how else did you think we got that smooth sweeping shot at the start of the video…?):

After a fun-filled day of Bond and filming, I threw myself in a taxi to the A&E department of Charing Cross hospital. They have a significant connection to Imperial College, as many of the medic students have placements there, so when I told them I was registered with the Imperial College Health Centre (hazards of being an international student, I’ve never registered with any other practice in the UK), they sorted me out no problem. The usual A&E business meant that I was waiting for a long time before I was seen by a doctor, but I got an X-ray without too much hassle. When I finally got to see the doctor and get a pair of coveted crutches, he was a little perplexed as to why he hadn’t seen me the night before when I had fallen over. My answer was to show him this picture:

Me in the actual Bond car from Quantum of Solace!

To be honest, it was totally worth it. Bond cars trump torn ligaments any day. But no matter how old I get, my crew at home will always remember my hobbling transition from 20 to 21.

One big happy family!

Large frozen turkey, £20.00. Roasting bags, £1.19. Oven tray, £1.50. The look on my face when I had to take out the turkey’s innards? Probably priceless.

This end of our 10-man dining table just misses out our turkey, but shows off some culinary treats nonetheless.

It’s Christmas time, and I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in the past month eating too much and studying too little. Home time in Ireland has been peaceful and generally uneventful, but the last few weeks of term were pretty hectic. Our 9 man house (or rather, 7 men and 2 women) put in a stellar effort at the obligatory Christmas feast; pudding, pigs in blankets, potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire puddings, punch, stuffing, even managed a turkey, and no food poisoning! Happy days all around.

Too many people, not enough chairs.

Despite the usual end-of-term coursework rush, there was a little time for some London-based shenanigans. Hot Tub Cinema club is another Rebel Bingo-type night out: you watch a film in a hot tub and get served drinks and popcorn. It was so much fun, we went as a 7 girl group for a friend’s 21st and had a great laugh. Bizarrely, our secret film theme was “Christmas” and they played… Die Hard? I guess it is set on Christmas Eve but still a bit of a stretch… I suspect this event is something that you’ll either love or hate, but I highly recommend it! Here’s a pic from their Facebook page:

50 points if you can spot me. Hint: I'm in a hot tub.

Now, even though my Christmas has been lovely ad stomach-stuffing, the worst thing about this time of year (apart from January exams) is trying to get your shopping done on time! One useful tool that I used with my friends back home is the online Secret Santa website, secretsanta.co.uk. One person can register and enter each person’s details in this website, and you’ll get an email with your Secret Sant-ee. Great for long-distance friendships and also for offices and workplaces.

When searching for my Secret Santa presents (I had two to get; one for a housemate and one for a friend at home), I can across a couple of really fun shops. There’s now a Harry Potter merchandise kiosk-like shop at Platform 9 and 3/4, full of clothes, wands, books, stuffed animals, and film trinkets galore. I picked up a Gryffindor mug for my Irish Secret Santee (be warned, Ravenclaw of Hufflepuff fans will be disappointed – the shop only caters to Gryffindor and Slytherin hopefuls). To be honest, I’m surprised it hasn’t cropped up sooner, but I suppose the wall-embedded trolley has been moved at least three times what with the King’s Cross renovations. You can now also get professional photographs taken with the updated trolley, which now has half a trunk and owl cage attached. For once, I resisted, and just got a snap of the shop sign:

You can even pick up a ticket for the Hogwarts express in here!

Another shopping gem that a few friends alerted me to was the French Connection Sample Sale in Camden. It happens twice a year, and it’s a warehouse event where the company sell off the sample clothes sent to shops when distributing a new merchandise line. I managed to pick up a men’s scarf and shirt for only £15 for my house Secret Santa, and also nabbed some dresses and a new bag for myself too!

I <3 my new accessory!

The bag is on sale for £37.50 on their website, and I got a sample version in perfect condition for £25. Bargain! Sign up to the French Connection mailing list for updates on their bi-annual sale.

Now, we all know this season is the season of giving, but receiving is also a great perk. I’ll leave you with a quick breakdown of my Christmas gifts to admire and laugh at. If you’re at all jealous, don’t be – I’m off to study for my dreaded January exams. As always, feel free to comment or email me if you’ve found any great shopping/entertainment events in and around London!

My brother worked on the Obama campaign in Chicago for a few months before President Obama was re-elected, and he brought me back this Facebook-branded stress ball. He told me that the company donated the merchandise to the campaign and that it was sitting in headquarters during the election. New good luck charm anyone? I think it’s pretty awesome, and I’m definitely going to be taking it with me to my exams!

A 21st present from my brothers, now all I need is an apartment to go with them!

Another inspirational present from my older brothers. These frames are from a gallery in Chicago, simple but elegant. In return, I bought my brother a Hugo Boss phone cover for his new Galaxy S3, but next year I’m going to have to work hard to get him something really good!

PS – In case any of you Instagram users are looking for a different platform to hipster-ise your photos, try the freeware program Picasa – I used it in the mobile photos above to soften the flash and give the Lego Campervan a 1960′s washout. (Blackberry doesn’t support Instagram, otherwise those subtle edits into the mainstream would’ve been a lot easier!)

I come from a relatively small city in south-west Ireland, and I get a lot of people from home coming over to London for a holiday weekend. On our travels we’ve had multiple opportunities to photobomb London’s finest attractions, which might interest some of you who may have just moved to London. Here’s a list of some of the places I’ve both dragged and been dragged to!

Platform 9 3/4
One of my personal favourites, I bring everyone here. This is the end of the line for the number 10 bus that goes past the Royal Albert Hall (and Imperial!) – perfect for a late-night bus trip through London if you’d like a cheap tour!

Underground Rebel Bingo

Sssssssssshhhhh. It’s a secret night out that only comes to London once every few months. A must-do for anyone living in London, it’s “disguised” as an etiquette school to throw off suspicion from the bingo-hating authorities.

Madame Tussauds

Do it once, get your creepy celebrity kicks out of it, and try to be a little creative. I find imitation works best for comedic effect. Most of the wax figures are pretty decent; I think my favourite is the Captain Jack Sparrow, but it’s hard to do a decent impression in normal clothes. Also, being female is a slight hindrance.

Portabello Market

Apart from the tasty range of food and wide selection of antiques to peruse, we managed to find a graffiti painting not dissimilar to Banksy’s infamous portraits. Well worth a look!

The Christmas Lights

One of the best things about living in London is seeing the city all decked out at Christmas time. The more commercial lights are decked out along Oxford Street and Picadilly Circus, but the Natural History Museum in South Kensington has some really pretty tree lights that twinkle in the (occasional) snow.

M&M World

Located in Leicester Square (tourist central!), this is a shop dedicated to M&M sweets and accompanying merchandise. It’s the world’s largest candy store, and generally thronged with people. Worth a look and a good place to find novelty birthday gifts!

Paddington Bear

Small and tucked away in Paddington Station, this bronze homage to children’s book character Paddington Bear is located very conveniently next to a Krispy Kreme shop. Bring a few jam sandwiches too!

Camden

Land of the free, home of the strange. Dedicate at least a day to exploring the stalls and shops of London’s famous market district. Make sure you check out Cyberdog, the shop that caters to the modern <del>drugged up</del> raver. I spent most of my time in there drooling over the novelty telephones, one hamburger phone and another high-heel-shaped device. Beware however; venturing into Camden often leads to tattoos and piercings – the origin of my recent nose piercing!

The Boat Race

A magnificent display of the never ending Oxford-Cambridge rivalry. It’s good to go catch the winner at Chiswick, but closer for Imperial students is the start at Putney, and at Hammersmith Bridge. (Actually, if you do find yourself near Hammersmith Bridge and are in a particularly hipster mood, check out Riverside Studios cinema for both foreign films and showings of big blockbusters like The Artist and The Dark Knight.)

Any red telephone box anywhere, also, a big red bus

Well hello there! Apologies for the long silence – exams and the ensuing end-of-year shenanigans were distracting to say the least, but here I am, back with a vengeance and with plenty of juicy updates.

First things first, I’ve passed my exams and cemented my place on the M.Eng course, so London will be having me for at least another two years! Feels good to write that, because, as you can probably tell from my sporadic blogging over the past year, 2nd year was absolutely insane and completely hectic. I even took a cheeky weekend trip home to Ireland towards the end of second term to get some TLC from my very surprised mammy and daddy – when I showed up at the door they thought I had dropped out of uni altogether! I’m really glad that I persevered though, I’m delighted with my results, and every year that passes here at Imperial gives me another sticker to add to my proud collection:

I put these on the back of my ID card after my last exams so that everyday I can see what I'm working towards, like a right old Imperial nerd.

I’m so excited to be going into 3rd year! The course is going to be as difficult as ever, but some older students have told me that the timetable is a bit lighter than 2nd year’s jam-packed schedule, so hopefully us bioengineers won’t be as stressed as we were this year. I’m also super pumped about choosing my subjects – I haven’t decided whether to specialise in the Electrical or Mechanical side of things yet, but I’m definitely taking Spanish, Finance, and Design along with my technical subjects, all of which I’m really looking forward to!

As for my summer plans, I’m currently in the middle of a two month internship at Skimlinks, a truly awesome start-up nestled in London’s hipster capital of Shoreditch. Two of my friends from Ireland are staying with me in the flat and working, and the rest of the house is a crazy mix of Spanish, French, and Italian. Thumbs up from me, because my Spanish is fairly rusty and talking to the Spaniards is doing wonders for my memory!

Anyway, I promised you the highlights of my summer so far, so here we go:

The Diamond Jubilee

I’m not ashamed to say that I got my adopted land’s flag out for the Queen’s Diamond Jubliee boat-race down the Thames. I got a bit of good-natured abuse from my Irish kinsmen and women back home, but credit where credit is due, that near 90-year-old lady deserved a good party. Is anyone else besides me amazed that herself and Philip stayed standing for so many hours? Incredible.

Fair play Lizzie!

The Amazing Spiderman Premiere

My housemate Alex (affectionately known by his surname Harrison because, let’s face it, there are far too many Alex-es in the world) and I went to Leicester Square for the Spiderman premiere to go celebrity-watching:

They're were a bit late, bless them. But check out the amazing set... and how close we were to the red carpet! It ended up stretching across where I was standing in this photo, exciting stuff!

We didn’t have anything for the celebs to scrawl their names on, but I did manage to get a conversation out of the man himself, Andrew Garfield. When he was signing beside us I plucked up my best Irish charm and said “Hey. Andrew. How’s it goin’?”, and, believe it or not, it worked! He looked at me with that big old loveable face and said (in a very Guilfordian accent) “Yeah, I’m alright, I’m livin’! How are you?”. At which point I giggled and mumbled something completely incoherent. Eye contact and banter with Peter Parker, not bad for a Monday afternoon!

I saw the film in the cinema a few weeks later, and it was amazing!! Definitely a toss-up between that and The Dark Knight Rises (which I saw in the Science Museum IMAX by the way, the Waterloo IMAX was booked solid for at least a month) for favourite movie of summer 2012.

I was way too starstruck by my fave actress as of 2008 to do anything but snap a quick pic... I did ask if I could get one with her, but her publicist politely declined. Next time I suppose!

Wimbledon

This really was one of our spur of the moment adventures. Sorcha, my Irish flatmate and long-suffering friend, convinced me and Karen (my other Irish comrade) to get up early on my weekend off (no mean feat, as my mother will happily attest to) so that we could stand in The Queue for grounds tickets into Wimbledon for the men’s final. Alas, GB’s hopes for victory were dashed, but it was a great day out all the same. I got slightly sunburnt and soaked to the skin multiple times within the space of a few hours while we watched the match from the spectator screens set up in Court 2.

7am wakeup call paid off well!

My brother’s graduation from London Business School

A seriously significant moment. It’s been so nice having my big brother around London this year, and I’ll miss him when he goes off to conquer the world in September. We’re all a bit spread out so it was really nice to get together to celebrate, although we sorely missed my eldest brother who lives in Philadelphia and couldn’t make it for the ceremony. Oh well, gives us a good excuse to head over to the States at some point soon!

4 out of 5 of our Hayes clan!

London 2012 opening ceremony

Before you gasp and drool with jealousy, no, I did not attend the actual ceremony. Instead, I joined my gaggle of Europeans in our local pub to watch it on a big screen. I honestly don’t know what was my favourite part of the night – JK Rowling and later her 100 foot tall inflatable Lord Voldemort, Mr Bean’s apparent disinterest with the whole event, or the sneaky Eastenders theme tribute. It was probably the utter shock of seeing the Queen herself greet and later skydive with James Bond to be honest – she really does have a sense of humour, bless her. Here’s a typically candid shot of me giving it socks for the Irish team’s entrance in the pub, somehow I don’t think my solo rendition of Ireland’s Call was particularly on-key:

Cheering my little heart out!

All in all, a good summer so far. Stay tuned for more touristy antics lads!

After a rather lazy few weeks at home, I’ve finally managed to get back into my working routine. Admittedly a little later than I had planned, but let’s be realistic. Three months without any Aislinn at home means I’ve got some social catching up to do, right? That’s my excuse, and I’m rollin’ with it.

Bioengineers taking a break from a last-minute coursework session at the end of term!

Now, I already wrote a bit about studying on this blog last year, just a bit of general info about morale and how high you should set your standards. I still stand by my previous advice, but I’m here to add a bit more:

Sleeping – I’ll be the first to admit I’ve overdosed on this one this Easter. Yesterday I woke up at 3pm, and the day before I fell asleep in the middle of revising. But no more! I got up at a respectable hour this morning (10 am, don’t you dare judge me) and got some solid work done at my dad’s gentle nudging. Do I regret my hours of staying up late and sleeping all day? Not at all. But I made a promise to myself to get back into the serious study for at least the last two weeks of the holidays, a goal I set at the beginning of the break, and anyone that shares my love for the duvet should do the same.

Applications – Now is the time, if you haven’t done so already, to get those job applications in, for the summer or otherwise. You won’t have any time during the Summer Term and it will almost certainly be too late by then. For those who haven’t managed to find anything yet, keep an eye on Imperial’s Jobslive service, and remember, you can almost always find yourself a UROP research position right here at Imperial. This summer in particular, if you grab yourself an unpaid position there’s always part-time work to be found to supplement your instant noodle diet at JobsForTheGames, the 2012 Olympic recruiting site.

Stay on Track – Keep clean, exercise, and do as much work as you can without sacrificing your entire holiday. Bioengineering’s exam period is going to be spanned over 6 weeks, so take the break now while you still can!

Despite the massive Friends/Gilmore Girls-shaped hole in my TV viewing life (E4, how could you desert me so?), I’ve managed to keep myself entertained outside of my studying hours. Click here for endless fun, I promise. Substitute “shufflin’” with “studyin’” and you’ve got a good idea of my life these days.
