At this months web forum Saul Batzofin, Infrastructure Programme Manager, ICT, spoke about the progress that has been made on the Personal Web Pages (PWP) Review and the new PWP templates.
The current PWP template will be updated to reflect the advances in web technology and design with the main objectives being to review the functionality, freshen up the visual design, update the technology, and include all grades of academic staff and post graduate students. A consultation exercise was undertaken and the Consultation Report [pdf] results determined some of the principles for the new PWP.
Priciples
The following key principles were developed by the review team:
- Automated creation of PWPs for all staff and PhD students – with individuals opting to make their PWP live
- Automatically decide whether information is shown – if content is available in source systems, it will be displayed on the new PWPs. Where content is not available, the PWP page will not display.
- Data is sourced where possible from existing systems, e.g. Symplectic, DSS, College Directory
- Consistent design across all PWPs
- Mobile friendly – PWPs to be render well on all devices
New PWP Design
The wireframe designs [PPT] for the new PWP have been created to incorporate the new features and functionality suggested in the consultation exercise. Some of the new features include:
- Automatic News and Events stream for articles and events relevant to the profiled individual
- Ability to insert a social media feed for Youtube, Twitter, Blog, Flickr where available
- Ability to include media mentions
- Feed of video/audio content from iMedia system where available
- CV upload functionality
- Separate biography tab
- Sub tabs within Research section to allow creation of sub sections detailing research activity
The Next Step
The next step is to implement the new PWP is the technical build and its intergration to other systems.
For more detail on the new PWP please visit the PWP Review under the Web Guides Projects Page

You may have spotted the Imperial screensaver on public PCs across the College. It pulls in the latest tweets, flickr photos and news from our College accounts.
You can now download the screensaver to your own PC.
The tweets that feed into the screensaver are from: @imperialcollege, @ImperialSpark and @icunion and the news is pulled from the College news feed.
The images are fed directly from Imperial College Flickr uploads. We can add your images too. If you have some great photos from around Campus or from an event or seminar we can tag these as our favourites and pull them through to the screensaver. Just upload the images to Flickr and tag them Imp150 and email Emma Chesterman: e.chesterman@imperial.ac.uk to let her know which ones you’d like her to select.
Please be aware that the screensaver is not compatible with Macs.

Three major webpages on the College website have been launched or refreshed over the last few weeks.
New Graduation site

New Graduation site
http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/graduation
The new pages provide essential information about the ceremony and reception for graduands and their guests, including how to book tickets and gowns. There is also information for any staff who wish to attend the ceremony.
Information will be updated in anticipation of the deadlines by which the graduand needs to complete specific actions. Content will also be tailored towards the appropriate graduation ceremony – either Commemoration Day (for undergraduates, held in October) or the Postgraduate Awards ceremony (for postgraduates, held in May).
It’s hoped that by initially directing graduands and their guests to these pages, the number of phone and email enquiries to the Graduation team can be minimised.
iTunes U and iTunes U mirror site

iTunes U mirror site
Imperial College London has launched the content of its media player on the iTunes U platform.

A post on the College’s online Reporter site explains more about the launch of the Imperial iTunes U channel. All users with a College login can upload and publish content such as audio and video clips. It is hoped that the iTunes U platform will also be used as a repository for lecture materials, and that content will be produced with the intention of using it for iTunes U.
Information on how to upload content to the College’s media player, as well as to our iTunes U channel can be found on the Website owners’ guide.

There are also links to a “making of” video, twitter feeds, Imperial College Union events, the College’s prospectuses, and top posts from previous years’ blogs. Also, click on the camera on the shelf for a surprise…
