The last few weekends I have been looking for a house. This has raised a number of interesting questions:

·      What is a split level maisonette?

·      Should I rent a house – a talk the other day left me feeling the chances of me passing all my exams – and therefore coming back next year - is at best 50%. This problem is compounded by the fact I have prioritized househunting over revision.

·      How is it that I can apparently afford what is essentially a nicer house than my family home?

·      Is there such thing as a ‘student area’ in London; or is it simply too big for this to happen?

Despite these quandaries, the thought of living in a house, nearer Imperial than my current location, is making this whole circus pretty fun!

Interesting…I’m an international student looking forward to coming to Imperial; is it then that private houses/apartments are cheaper than Imperial housing?

“Hi Chikezie
All potential students who submit their application within certain certain conditions are guaranteed student accommodation for their first year. For second year onwards, you are required to find private accommodation.
Rental prices vary hugely depending on the area of London - but as a guide, next year i will be living in a house in Hammersmith that costs about £120 a week, which is comparable with halls rates.

There is an Imperial Accommodation video that gives a tour of a second year’s property here:

Personally, even if you could find cheaper private housing, I would still recommend living in halls for your first year, as it makes it much easier to make friends/get involved in social events etc
Hope that helps, Jonny”
